Discover the ‘Real Places’ of the Internet on May 2nd

wtr tubes rect 460x307 Discover the Real Places of the Internet on May 2nd

This looks to be a fascinating SFU City Program lecture coming up on May 2nd. The event should appeal to a wide cross-section of people—even those of you who didn’t think you had an interest in the inner workings of the interest!

Tubes and Exchanges: Discovering the Real Places of the Internet

DATE: May 2, 2013, 7:00-9:00 pm
LOCATION: SFU Harbour Centre [1400-1430], 515 W Hastings St, Vancouver (map)
ADMISSION: Free, but seating is limited, so reservations are required.

When a squirrel chewed through a cable and knocked him offline, Andrew Blum, a journalist, started wondering what the Internet was really made of. So he set out to go see it—the underwater cables, secret switches, and other physical bits that make up the net. Blum’s talk will take you on a journey through this network of networks.

He will explore its evolution over time and discuss how centralized hubs called Internet Exchanges (there are 350 in the world) are making the Internet faster and more affordable for everyone in the cities where they operate. He will highlight Vancouver’s Internet Exchange, operated by BCNET and located at Harbour Centre, as well as what it means for the city’s businesses, public post-secondary institutions, and future economic development.

Speaker/Lecturer

Andrew Blum is the author of Tubes: A Journey to the Center of the Internet, the first book-length look at the physical heart of the Internet.

Beyond Downtown: Community Planning Symposium on February 8, 2013

Screen shot 2013 01 17 at 9.54.13 AM 788x1024 Beyond Downtown: Community Planning Symposium on February 8, 2013The Planning Students Association at the University of British Columbia’s School of Community and Regional Planning (SCARP) announce the 5th annual SCARP Student Symposium, which will take place on the UBC Vancouver campus Friday, February 8, 2013.

The 2013 Symposium, which aims to bring together planning practitioners, students, business owners, developers, and engaged citizens, will be focused on topics around ‘Beyond Downtown & Outside the Box‘.

With the overwhelming majority of population growth taking place in suburban areas the need for a modern take on suburban design has become critical. Innovative planning and design ideas are needed to move towards sustainability across British Columbia and beyond. At the UBC SCARP Student Symposium, we will explore fresh new ideas to guide and revitalize our urban, rural, and first nations communities in the years to come.

We’re excited to welcome our keynote speakers Ellen Dunham-Jones, co-author of Retrofitting Suburbia: Urban Design Solutions for Redesigning Suburbs, and Patrick Stewart, the first Aboriginal architect to become President of the Architectural Institute of BC.  They’ll be joined by a panel of local leaders in the community planning sector including Vancouver’s Brian Jackson, Surrey’s Jean Lamontagne, Coquitlam’s Jim McIntyre, and New Westminster’s Lisa Spitale.

This year we’ve partnered with the Planning Institute of British Columbia to offer 6.25 Organized/Structured CPD Learning Units to PIBC members. Everyone is welcome but space is limited so register today!

How to Register

To register and find more information including a schedule of panel sessions, visit the Symposium website at http://www.scarpsymposium.ca

CivicMeet Vancouver is an informal meetup that seeks to connect Vancouver area public and private sector civic innovators working to create a more open, engaged civil society. This is the bi-national launch of an event that has originated in San Francisco and one that the organizers hope will become a regular gathering here in Vancouver.  The event is being co-hosted by me—in my role as director of community engagement at PlaceSpeak—and Amanda Gibbs, Principal of Public Assembly, a social innovation company focused on creative and productive public engagement.
