September Urbanist Meetup in New Westminster

September Urbanist Meetup in New WestminsterIt’s time again for the Vancouver Urbanists Meetup. This month, we’re expanding the definition of Vancouver to include the metro area and heading over to New Westminster. There is a lot of interesting urban development occurring in New West (as well as a lot of great urbanists!), that those of us living in Vancouver don’t often get a chance to see. Well here’s your opportunity!

We’ll be gathering at the Terminal Pub in New West  on September 9th from 3-5pm. The Terminal Pub came into the world in 1940, as the Terminal Hotel, to create a social place for workers who spent their nine-to-five earning a living in the many industries in the area. The pub recently underwent a renovation to revive its legacy and refocus on being a neighbourhood pub.

Come out and enjoy a beer or bite to eat with your fellow urbanists. Topics of discussion may include New West’s urban revitalization, what you’ve been up to over the summer, or upcoming events that you are excited about.

The Terminal Pub is located at 115 12th Street in New Westminster (map). It’s a short walk away from the Skytrain. (If you are coming from Vancouver, feel free to let me know and we can ride over together.

As always, feel free to drop in when you can and stay as long as you want. We’ll be there from 3 pm until at least 5 pm. Give me a call or text at 604-992-4197 if you have any questions.

August Vancouver Urbanist Meetup

It’s August already, and that means it’s time for the next Vancouver Urbanist Meetup!

This month we’ll be gathering at Darby’s Public House in Kitsilano on August 12th from 3-5pm. Darby’s has been a local and independent establishment in Kits for over 30 years.

 August Vancouver Urbanist Meetup

Come out and enjoy a local craft beer or bite to eat with your fellow urbanists. Topics of discussion may include Vancouver’s new head of planning and development, how you are enjoying summer in the city, or the extension of the seawall.

Darby’s is located at 2001 Macdonald Street,at 4th Ave. (map) It’s close to both the seawall and the 7th Ave bike routes for cyclists. For transit fans, there are many busses you can catch going any which way along 4th or MacDonald, or it’s a 5 minute walk from the 99 B-Line.

As always, feel free to drop in when you can and stay as long as you want. We’ll be there from 3 pm until at least 5 pm. Give me a call or text at 604-992-4197 if you have any questions.

July’s Vancouver Urbanist Meetup is in Gastown

Julys Vancouver Urbanist Meetup is in Gastown

It’s the first week of July (Happy belated Canada Day!), and that means it’s time to start thinking about the next Vancouver Urbanist Meetup!

This month we’ll be gathering at the Metropole Community Pub in Gastown. The Met is a great example of evolution of Gastown. The pub has retained its original mosaic tile floors, stained glass, exposed brick—and low prices. But more importantly, it remains connected to the local neighbourhood, employing local residents and donating 25% of its profits to community organizations in Gastown and the Downtown Eastside.

Come out and enjoy a cheap drink or affordable bite to eat with your fellow urbanists. There will be a lot to talk about, including the history and evolution of Gastown and the impact of the Woodward’s redevelopment. I’m also interested in hearing your reports from the recent Vancouver Urban Forum and Velo-City events.

The Metropole Community Pub is located at 320 Abbott St. (map) As always, feel free to drop in when you can and stay as long as you want. We’ll be there from 3 pm until at least 5 pm.

You can RSVP on Facebook or Eventbrite, or simply show up if you are in the neighbourhood. Give me a call or text at 604-992-4197 if you have any questions.

March’s Vancouver Urbanist Meetup is this Sunday

This month’s Vancouver Urbanist Meetup has a special twist.  Each Sunday during the month of March, the Museum of Vancouver is hosting SALA SPEAKS @MOV:

With an aim to spark participatory and accessible discussions about the role of architecture in our community and beyond, SALA SPEAKS @MOV is a 4-part series presented in partnership with the School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture (SALA) at the University of British Columbia, that invites their faculty to speak to the wider issues, inspirations, and challenges that configure their research, practice, and teaching here in Vancouver.

This weeks presentations are on the theme of  ’Constructing’:

Tackling the notion of “constructing”, Matthew Soules will talk about micro-Infrastructures and residences, and share thoughts on public protest. Inge Roecker’s presentation will share creative notions around the theme, through a consideration of ‘urban acupuncture’ for Vancouver’s chinatown.

The event runs from 2-4pm at the Museum of Vancouver (1100 Chestnut Street)  Admission is $12 (or FREE for MOV members and UBC SALA students). You can order your tickets here.

features sunset grill Marchs Vancouver Urbanist Meetup is this SundayGiven that I would like to attend this event, and expect that many Vancouver urbanists do as well, I am pushing back the start-time of this months get-together until 4pm and hosting it at a nearby pub.

This month we’ll be meeting on March 11th from 4-6pm, at the Sunset Grill near Kits Beach in Kitsilano. (2204 York Avenue [map] ).

Come out to enjoy a drink, say hi to your fellow urbanists, and compare notes or get a de-brief of what Matthew  and Inge had to say.

Come kick off the new year with me and your fellow urban wonks at the fist urbanists meetup of 2012! We’ll be meeting this coming Sunday (January 8th) from 3-5pm, for a few pints and a lively discussion about urbanism in Vancouver.

This month, we’ll be exploring the reinvention of a Kitsilano classic: The Bimini (2010 W 4th Ave., V6J 1M9 map). The pub recently reopened after a 2007 fire gutted the main room. It has a long community history, with highlights including being BC’s first licensed neighborhood pub and a former meeting place for Greenpeace.

We’ll be there from 3 pm until at least 5pm.  Feel free to drop in when you can.  Give me a call or text at 604-992-4197 if you have any questions or are running late.

You can RSVP on EventbriteFacebook, or by leaving a comment letting me know you’re be coming.
