The Atlantic Takes on Cities

September 19th, 2011

One of my favourite publications, both online and off has long been The Atlantic.  Since my university days, the print magazine has provided me with a broad yet insightful view on foreign affairs, politics, economics, and—perhaps most importantly—culture.

In recent years I have turned to the online edition on a nearly daily basis to get up to speed on what is going on in society.  I have especially appreciated their focus on urban issues and cities. Some of my favourite commentators, like Richard Florida, Alison Arieff, and Kaid Benefield have provided insightful posts and articles for a while now. My love of The Atlantic‘s perspectives is reflected in the fact that articles from The Atlantic have been almost a weekly presence on my Friday 5 lists.

This month however, The Atlantic has doubled down on their interest in cities.  They have launched a new site called The Atlantic Cities:

The Atlantic Cities : Place MatterThe Atlantic Cities explores the most innovative ideas and pressing issues facing today’s global cities and neighborhoods. By bringing together news, analysis, data, and trends, the site is an engaging destination for an increasingly urbanized world.

Some of the features I’m looking most forward to include:

  • The Big Fix: A weekly exploration of how cities attempt to solve problems, one issue at a time. They will be looking to both practitioners in the field, as well as regular readers, to chime in with their experiences on wide range of topics.
  • Why I Love My City: An interview series about all the reasons why we choose to make a particular place home.

If you are at all interested in cities and urbanism, you’ll want to add the site to your RSS reader and follow them on Twitter.  alternatively, you can continue to check in here and follow me on Twitter as I’m sure I’ll be posting regular content from the site.
